When I think back to my childhood there's a few things that always stick out to me: my parents’ cooking, Noche Buena and shopping with my mom at Sedano’s to buy groceries for the holiday feast. It’s a not so well kept secret that my dad was the real cook at home. He was a chef at a hotel in Havana, Cuba and although she won't admit it, he’s the one that taught my mom how to cook. So all of my mother’s recipes are really my dad’s, but he never complained and always let her take all of the credit. That’s a great husband, if you ask me.

Noche Buena is almost here and the older I get, the more I realize I need to start learning my mom's recipes so I can someday pass them onto my son. So you can get used to more of my family's recipes posted onto my blog. The recipe I'll be sharing today is my mom's Cuban-ish Congri recipe, also known as Moros y Cristianos or Arroz Moro. It's called "Cuban-ish" because of the addition of bacon, because everything is better with bacon.

When I was in middle school, my internal organs were 80% rice krispie treats. Even though my diet is no longer mostly sugar, I still have a soft spot in my heart for these sweet treats. So when Graze approached me about teaming up for a recipe, I decided it was time to upgrade one of my favorite childhood treats with a healthy-ish and adult twist. With some brown butter, a sprinkle of toffee and a ton of Graze’s Super Cacao Nibs, these rice treats are definitely NOT what I lived off in school, but they’re delicious all the same.

Doce Provisions - Cheap and Delicious

While I was pregnant, I dreamt of all of the food I was going to inhale the minute this kid came out of me. Sushi, whiskey, medium rare meat, fresh pressed unpasteurized juices, there was a very long list. However, when push came to shove (see what I did there?) and I gave birth to my little terror bundle all I craved ravenously was Doce Provisions. I tried the food at Doce Provisions about two weeks before going into labor and I could not stop thinking about it. I was enamored with how delicious all of their food was, impressed with their presentation and obsessed with their low prices. This place was the embodiment of the Spanish "3 B." For those unfamiliar with the "3 B," it stands for bueno, bonito y barato roughly translated to "Good, Pretty and Cheap."

This Little Havana gem has given me the motivation to get back into writing about restaurant experiences. Nestled in a neighborhood known for some of the city's best Central and South American restaurants and located on a street rich in Cuban history, Lung Yai Thai Tapas has won me over. Maybe it's the small open kitchen or the coziness of the indoor eating area. Perhaps it's the fact that the Chef Bas has a personality ten times bigger than his physical frame. Whatever it is, I'm hooked.

I've been to Cochon twice before and what I vividly remember is chugging bourbon straight from the bottle and doing an army crawl through the Four Seasons outdoor patio to eavesdrop on gossip that Cochon is a pork lover's absolute dream event. It's everything SOBEWFF wishes it could be without the sand in your shoes, giant crowds and obnoxious tourists.

Almost 4 months ago, I decided to take a break from the blog. My personal life had just been flipped upside down and I needed to reassess what I was going to do. Without even realizing it, I had been plunged into a new chapter in my life that would soon consume my entire being. I'm sure you're asking yourself what kind of changes could cause this kind of introspection and the change was a very simple one, I found out I was pregnant. FGH had gotten herself knocked up and my break from the blog couldn't have come at a better time.
